There are many reasons why you should choose the floor in your home to be tiled, but it also has some disadvantages. In this post, you can read more about its pros and cons. I will tell you why I chose tiles for my apartment.
From the very beginning of making the plans for the renovation, I knew that the floor in the apartment should be with tiles. There was a time when I wasn’t sure if they would be only in the living room/kitchen or in the whole apartment, but later I decided that it would be better to have them in all the rooms. My friends and family tried to talk me out of it, because of some disadvantages of ceramic tiles like heat being pulled from the feet much faster. In the end, I’m glad I didn’t listen to them! The floor isn’t that cold even during the winter months, tiles are also easy to clean and look very stylish.
But still, I want you to be informed about more of the advantages and disadvantages of having tile flooring in your home. Continue reading more below.
Pros
- Easy to clean
- Looks like new over the years
- Great for underfloor heating
- Budget
- Water-resistant
Cons
- Cold in the winter season
- Slippery
- Every little hair is noticeable
- Grout lines get dirty easy if they are white
Pro: Easy to clean
Tiles are indeed very easy to clean. They are a very good choice if you don’t have enough time for chores. I use a steam cleaner and after each cleaning, they shine like brand new.
Pro: They look like new over the years
This is one of the reasons why I chose to have tiles in my apartment. They will certainly retain their beautiful and luxorious appearance even after 10 years..
Pro: Great for underfloor-heating
Although I don’t have underfloor heating, I know this is probably the best combination for your home. Tiles with underfloor heating combines perfectly style and coziness at once.
Pro: Budget
The prices of different tiles can vary a lot, it depends mainly on the model, quality, dimensions, etc. The size of the rooms that you will cover with tiles is also important. For my apartment, which is 50 square meters, I paid around $800 for the flooring of the whole apartment. You can read about how I bought it and renovate it.
Pro: Water-resistant
It is normal when we are in the kitchen and cooking to accidentally spill some water or different liquid on the floor, so waterproof tiles are a very good choice for your apartment. It is also important to note that they protect against cracks and bumps which could happen to parquet or laminate.
Cons: Cold in the winter season
If you are a person like me, who always feels cold, you will find yourself in discomfort during the winter season. Tiles conduct heat much more efficiently than other materials like wood, this can be problematic for the fast heating of the space you are living in. The solution I found for this is insulation. When I insulated the apartment I felt a radical difference in temperature and now I enjoy the heated and cozy rooms even in the winter. So it very much depends on the construction of the building, is there external and internal insulation, and what type of heating you use for your home. On the other hand, this could be an advantage during the hot days of summer, what do you think?
Cons: Slippery
Ah, those slippery tiles! Sometimes I laugh at myself for the funny movements I make when I slide on the tiles after a bath. Joke aside! A slippery floor is a serious problem because it hides many dangers. The solution I found for this problem was a rug through the bathroom and moving around with slippers. Be careful, because a slip on the tiles can bring you a lot of injuries!
Cons: Every little hair is noticeable
White tiles and long dark hair like mine are not a good combo. Trust me! This is one of my biggest problems because every fallen hair immediately grabs your attention on the white tiles. The solution, if it can be called a solution, is the small convenient vacuum cleaner with which I clean hair from the floor every day.
Cons: Grout lines get dirty very easy
MY BIGGEST MISTAKE! White tile joints – I do not recommend them! They get dirty very quickly, are difficult to clean, and because of that require daily maintenance which is annoying. I still haven’t found a solution to this problem. Please share with me, if you know something to solve this!
This is my experience with tiles for flooring. I can say that they are very beautiful and eye-grabbing, but I can not hide their shortcomings. If you are wondering whether to choose tiles for your home, take into consideration both the pros and cons. The important thing is that you like it because it’s your home!
